In Memory Of Anita Zaffke
About 5:45 p.m. Saturday, May 11, 2009 Anita
Zaffke stopped at the intersection of U.S.
Highway 12 and Old McHenry Road as the light
turned from green to yellow, Lora L. Hunt
driving a Chevrolet Impala at 55 mph behind
Zaffke, told police "she was painting her
nails as she drove and did not see [the
motorcycle] until contact was already made.
Anita Zaffke was wearing a helmet and a
reflective vest.
In the crash that killed
motorcyclist Anita, Lora L. Hunt, 48, of
Morris was ticketed by the Lake County
sheriff's police with failure to reduce
speed to avoid an accident.
Windy City Women Riders
urges all lawmakers to vote for stiffer
penalties for distracted drivers! The life
you save could be your own.
The tragedy that took Anita Zaffke's
life, an innocent motorcyclist hit and
killed by a distracted driver while
stopping at a light, has reminded us all
that we need tougher stricter laws for
distracted drivers. We should all work
with our elected officials to change the
current laws in place.
We all know that laws move at a snails
pace - so in the meantime there are
things we can do to get the word out.
While we can't reach every single person
- we can contact companies to change
their fleet policies.
We highly recommend that we begin a
campaign to write, call and email
companies we all do business with that
dispatch vehicles. Urge these companies
to Ban cell phone use in company
vehicles (the most effective) or require
hands free use and have a zero tolerance
policy for all forms of distracted
driving, such as eating, reading,
texting, etc.
Urge these companies to educate their
employees on the dangers of distracted
driving - there are plenty of examples
this month alone in many states of
people killed due to distracted driving
- this doesnt just happen to
motorcylists - but the rate of fatality
is clearly higher.
Suggest that these companies require
distracted driving education to all
employees who drive a company vehicle
On the way to the meet up point for
Anita Zaffke's wake we were passed by
WFLD Fox News Van whose driver was
talking on his cell phone the whole time
in heavy traffic. He was not using a
hands free device and while his activity
was not illiegal he was very clearly
distracted.

step - our first step is to begin with
